Why Most Female Dancehall Artistes Are Single: Successful Career or Public Criticism?
Being in the entertainment industry can put a strain on one’s personal life. Despite the perks that come with fame, the spotlight also brings public scrutiny, which has been speculated to be a big issue affecting the relationship of most female entertainers.
Amidst the ongoing saga with regard to Shaneil Muir’s relationship status, the question has been raised as to what is the main issue for the relationship ship failure of most female dancehall entertainers. “Probably the only issue that is destroying the relationship is public pressure,” one person stated on Facebook.
Shaneil Muir
Most of Jamaica’s prominent female Dancehall artistes are known to be single, and Shaneil Muir has seemingly joined the singles’ club. While the reason for her rumoured breakup had nothing to do with the public, she faced a wave of criticism from internet users when she introduced her now ex-fiancee in November 2023.
However, the Top Gyal artiste defended her boyfriend against comments criticising his appearance and showed off her love. Recently, she mentioned her ex-boyfriend cheating on her and posted a statement indicating that she is now single.
Jada Kingdom
Another Dancehall artiste who faced negative responses from the public regarding her relationships is Jada Kingdom. Jada Kingdom is, of course, not in the singles’ club since she and American rapper Paridson Fontaine, the ex-boyfriend of rapper Megan Thee Stallion, have been dating since late 2023.
However, the Feelings artiste is no stranger to receiving criticism regarding her love life and her promotion of what she calls the “Gen Z Jezebel” lifestyle. Jada has been involved with producer Verse Simmonds, rapper Nas EBK, and reportedly Afrobeats star Burna Boy.
Spice
Queen of Dancehall Spice, legally named Grace Hamilton, is known to be single, with her last publicly known boyfriend being Justin Budd. Spice and Justin, a cinematographer, met in Atlanta, USA, on the set of Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta and dated for two years.
The pair broke up in 2022 after apparently experiencing issues in their relationship, such as Justin wanting Spice to tone down her risque performances. Since their relationship ended, Spice has not been linked with any other man.
Shenseea
Another member of the singles’ club is Shenseea, whose last rumoured boyfriend was London On Da Track. The Rebel artiste, born Chinsea Linda Lee, was said to be dating the American producer in 2022.
Although she did not confirm it, the producer’s baby’s mother made it clear that the pair were close when she made disparaging remarks about Shenseea’s son and not wanting him around her daughter. Shenseea was also rumoured to be involved with superstar rapper Drake, a claim she denied, and her former producer Romeich Major.
D’Angel
Dancehall veteran D’Angel, born Michelle Downer, is publicly known to be single, but she has been rumoured to have dated Dancehall artiste G-Whizz. The Stronger singer clarified in 2023 that she and G-Whizz were only friends, shutting down the rumours in an interview.
Her last public relationship was with Dancehall veteran Beenie Man, to whom she was once married. D’Angel, who initially dated Beenie Man’s former rival Bounty Killer, got married to Beenie Man in 2006, welcomed a son sometime later, and finalised their divorce in 2019.
Pamputtae
Dancehall veteran Pamputtae, Eveana Henry, has apparently been focusing on her career and navigating life as a single parent while remaining in the singles club for many years. She has not been rumoured to be dating anyone in years, and she expressed in 2020 that dating was difficult since she has children.
“I had to think differently about relationships as a single mother because a nuh any and anybody me bring round my sons,” she previously told the Jamaica Gleaner.
Ishawna
Another entertainer who is single, according to public knowledge, is Ishawna. The Equal Rights artiste was rumoured to have dated Skatta Burrell, her manager. The rumours go far back to at least 2014.
Prior to dating Skata, Ishawna was also romantically involved with popular selector Foota Hype for 9 years, which she said was an abusive relationship that ended in early 2014. Ishawna, legally named Ishawna Smith, was also rumoured to be dating Dancehall artiste Masicka from 2016 to 2018.
Venessa Bling
Dancehall entertainer Vanessa Bling is another Jamaican celebrity in the music industry who is known to be single. Vanessa Bling was engaged in 2015, but the identity of her ex-fiance was never revealed.
She was previously involved with prominent Dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel, and allegedly got pregnant but had a miscarriage. Vanessa, born Vanessa Saddler, was also rumoured to be dating I-Octane around 2015, but she did not confirm those speculations.
Sheba
Dancehall artiste Sheba is another entertainer who is publicly known to be single. The Like Christmas artiste keeps her love life private, except for when she shared that she hooked up with Vybz Kartel while she was a part of his Gaza camp.
Aside from detailing in 2019 how she reportedly had a first hookup with the Gaza Boss after having Street Vybz Rum for the first time, Sheba has been quite mute about anyone else she was intimate with.
Hood celebrity
Another Dancehall artiste who keeps her love life private is Hood Celebrity, who appears to be single in the public eye.
In 2021, the US-based, Jamaican-born singer stated that she was a virgin at the time. Hood Celebrity, born Tina Pinnock, was 30 at the time, and she candidly shared that she was into girls. Furthermore, she stated that when she was dating guys, she still did not have sexual intercourse with them.
Dovey Magnum
Dancehall artiste Dovey Magnum is seemingly among the single ladies in the Dancehall fraternity. It was said in 2021 that she was dating, but the identity of the individual was not disclosed.
Dovey Magnum, legally named Simsky Kimberly Harrison, has kept her love life private, and there have not been any rumours about her being with anyone.
Macka Diamond
Dancehall veteran Macka Diamond, legally named Charmaine Munroe, stated in 2023 that her successful career negatively impacted her love life. She indicated that the money she earns and her raunchy performances would cause issues in her love life, which seems to be why she might currently be still.
Macka Diamond’s last publicly known boyfriend was Jamaican singer Spotlight. The pair split in 2019, and she reportedly got engaged in 2021 to a white man. She also mentioned not wanting to date any more Jamaican man and expressed a lack of interest in the younger men pursuing her.
