With jurors stuck in a deadlock and unable to reach a unanimous decision in the double murder case of American rapper YNW Melly, the case was declared a mistrial on Saturday.
YNW Melly, born Jamell Demons, was charged with the 2018 murders of his fellow “YNW” collective rappers Christopher “Juvy” Thomas Jr. and Anthony “Sakchaser” Williams on October 26. It was alleged that the rapper shot and killed Thomas Jr. and Williams while they were all in a Jeep.
Jurors began deliberating after closing arguments by the defence and the prosecution were made on Thursday. Several hours into deliberations, members of the jury were unable to reach a single verdict.
Following Friday’s deadlock, the Jury remained split on Saturday, forcing Broward Circuit Judge John Murphy to declare YNW Melly’s case a mistrial after 14 hours of deliberations. Judge Murphy thanked the members of the jury for their time and service despite not being able to come to a unanimous verdict.
Murphy had previously denied defence attorney David Howard’s motion to declare a mistrial, as the defence believed that the jury had been “tainted” by the testimony of Melly’s ex-girlfriend’s mother, Felicia Holmes.
