Amidst the online drama surrounding Leon Bailey being included in Jamaica’s Copa America squad, Craig Butler, the manager of Bailey took to social media to list several requirements that need to be met before the player returns to the team.

In March 2024, Leon Bailey who is currently 26 years old revealed that he will be taking a “break” from the Reggae Boyz. After his announcement, Jamaica’s head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson had expressed that Bailey not being in the team would limit Jamaica’s abilities.

The coach also mentioned that he hoped Bailey’s decision would result in improvements in the federation because he was making a sacrifice to make a point. Hallgrímsson went on to state that Bailey is currently the best player in the country.

With that said, the coach is eager to have Bailey play again but Bailey, Butler and JFF are at loggerheads and unable to find a solution. With regard to the issues that need to be resolved, Butler listed 5 issues.

Butler wrote, “This is 2024….we all know that football on field success cannot be achieved without off field success. Good administration = great results. Leon and I require some basic administrative improvements.”

“We recommend that the following be addressed”

1. Review of player contracts to address matters of security, long haul travel and rooms
2. Review and monitoring of employee contracts to improve employee – player relations
3. adopting global standards relating to communication with the players
4. adopting global standards relating to the determination of player affiliation
5. Immediately addressing the clear (perception of or reality of) conflict of interest at the level of the technical committee Chairman. We believe that (as is the case globally) the Chairman of the Technical Committee should not hold any club affiliation.

“Out of many. One people”🇯🇲

Butler also reminded everyone that, “Bailey has stated that he is taking a break from the Jamaica national team for his mental health and to spend time with his family.” See the full post and some reactions below:
