At least four children were murdered by a man with an axe at a kindergarten in southern Brazil. The incident occurred on Wednesday at around 09:00 local time (12:00 GMT) in Blumenau city, where the attacker jumped over the Cantinho Bom Pastor nursery wall and apparently randomly targeted the kids.
Reports from firefighters indicate that approximately 40 children were present at the nursery during the incident. Four other children were injured and have been hospitalized, with at least one in critical condition.
The attacker, identified as a 25-year-old man, was reported to be in custody by the police. The military police said that he surrendered himself at one of the stations in town.
Blumenau city officials have suspended classes until tomorrow while the governor of Santa Catarina state has declared three days of mourning in response to the tragic incident.
The incident has been addressed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who expressed his condolences and sent prayers for the families of the victims in a Tweet. “There is no greater pain than that of a family that loses its children or grandchildren, even more so in an act of violence against innocent and defenseless children,” he wrote.
There was a similar incident in 2021 when an 18-year-old man killed two staff members and three toddlers at a nursery in the municipality of Saudades.
