The anniversary of the deaths of basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gigi was yesterday honoured by Los Angeles sculptor Dan Medina, when he sculpted, carried, and erected a 160-pound statue made of bronze at the crash site in Calabasas.
In an interview with TMZ Sports yesterday, Medina mentioned that he took the monument up the hill by a wagon which broke halfway through the journey, he had to complete the trek by carrying the statue that is separated into 2 pieces of 60 pounds and 120 pounds on foot.
The statue is an incredible one, which depicts Kobe in a Lakers uniform with his arm around his daughter Gigi who is also wearing a basketball uniform and holding a ball.
The sculptor told the interviewer that he also has a lifesize replica of the model and is hoping that the city will permit him to permanently erect it, as this one was only temporary and would be taken down at sunset.
“Heroes come and go, but legends are forever” was inscribed at the bottom of the monument along with the names of all nine victims who perished in the crash.
Social media was abuzz yesterday with tributes from athletes, celebrities, and fans of the legend pouring in from all over the world. Lamar Odom, an old teammate of Bryant, was given a diamond pendant in memory of the Bryants.
Kobe, his daughter Gigi and seven other persons died in a helicopter crash on the Calabasas hillside on January 26, 2020, while en route to a girls basketball game.
