Robert Montague Resigns After Probe By The Integrity Commission
Robert Montague has tendered his resignation with immediate effect from Cabinet as Minister Without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation in the Prime Minister Andrew Holness led administration.
This announcement comes just days after the Integrity Commission concluded its 245-page investigation report which revealed that Montague in his capacity as National Security Minister from 2016 to 2018, knowingly granted gun licenses to persons with criminal backgrounds and of questionable character.
Kevon Stephenson, Director of Investigations at the Integrity Commission reportedly found six instances in which Montague as the National Security Minister and head of the FLA at that time, overruled the recommendation of the board and approved gun permits to persons whose applications were initially denied due to their criminal background.
However, in a statement on Thursday, Montague’s response to the investigation by the Integrity Commission is that it is “grossly misrepresentative and incomplete”.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has since released an official statement dated March 11, 2022, confirming the resignation of Robert Montague. The statement does not provide any detail on the reason for Montague’s sudden resignation. However, the PM noted that Montague expressed that it was a privilege to have had the “opportunity to serve at the highest levels in the government”.
