According to his wife Monica, Sanchez, born Kevin Jackson, “has no words” for anyone currently. Monica told The Star that the death of Ivey was heartbreaking for all of them, but at the same time, there was still a sense of gratitude that her suffering ended.

Monica explained that Ivey, who had migrated to Canada decades ago, was “feeling too much pain” which the doctors tried to subside by giving her morphine through the IV. Ivey, who was given three to six months to live after being diagnosed with cancer, had stopped talking Saturday and, even though they prayed she would improve, they received news of her death on Tuesday morning.

Sanchez, who is the oldest child of his mother grew up in church as Ivey was a devoted Christian who ensured all of her five children were brought up in the church. As a long-standing Apostolic Church member, Ivey was also the evangelist at her church in Canada.

Monica also added that her husband’s talent “was first recognised,” in church and “singing gospel songs is always special to him.”

“He and his mother shared a special bond and any time we had shows in Canada, we would always make the time to go and see her and sometimes overnight at her home. It was always a pleasure,” she said.

Sanchez, who was inducted into the International Gospel Hall of Fame, was a part of the junior and senior choir of the Rehoboth Apostolic Church growing up. One of his earlier songs that took off his professional career over three decades ago was a Christian favourite entitled ‘Amazing Grace’, which was dedicated to his mother.
