New Privacy Features Coming to WhatsApp
On Tuesday, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Instagram and Facebook that new WhatsApp privacy changes would be made soon on the international messaging app.
The Meta Inc.-owned messaging service will introduce features such as the ability for users to leave groups silently and choose who can see them online. The first feature will begin rolling out this month and allows users to leave group chats without alerting the other members within the group. Only the group administrator will be notified.
The second feature will allow users to choose who can or can not see them when they are online and will also be released this month. The final feature that the service plans on rolling out is reportedly still in its testing phase, but according to the company, it will be released soon. The feature will allow messengers to block the receivers from capturing screenshots of view-once photos and videos.
Over the years, WhatsApp has made several changes attempting to increase safety features for users, such as protecting calls and messages with end-to-end encryption and two-step verification. Their parent company, Meta, has also made changes to other apps, such as Instagram, though they have not always been met with a favourable response.
