In the second World Cup quarterfinal match on Friday, Argentina clashed with the Netherlands at the Lusail Stadium for a position in the semifinals.
Today’s match saw the Netherlands face Argentina for the sixth time in the World Cup. After suffering a devastating loss in their World Cup opener, the Argentines have rebounded and are considered favourites to walk away with this year’s title. But the Netherlands has put forward a good lineup in this year’s tournament, conceding only two goals so far in Qatar.
Holding 42% of the possession for the first half, the Argentines walked away with the half’s only goal, with Nahuel Molina opening the scoring for Argentina with an assist from Lionel Messi in the first 35 minutes. The Netherlands and Argentina both picked up two yellow cards, with a total of 8 and 6 fouls, respectively.
Messi searched for a goal in the second half, missing a promising free kick in the 63rd minute, but propelled his team to a 2-0 lead in the 73rd. Second-half substitute Wout Weghorst opened the scoring for the Netherlands in the 83rd minute, with Argentina’s Leandro Paredes bringing the game to a halt in the 89th after booting the ball into the Dutch dugout. Weghorst went on to deliver for his team once more, equalising the match in the last moments of added time.
With yellow cards being handed out nonchalantly, both teams failed to take the lead in extra time, and in the second penalty shootout for the day, Argentina secured their semifinal spot with a 4-3 penalty win against the Netherlands.
