Marlon Samuels Found Guilty of Violating ICC’s Anti-Corruption Code

After a hearing by an independent anti-corruption tribunal, it was revealed that the former West Indies cricket player Marlon Samuels was found guilty of four violations under the ECB’s anti-corruption code.
The verdict came Samuels exercised his right to a hearing before the tribunal after being charged by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in September 2021.
This case pertains to the ECB’s 2019 Abu Dhabi T10 tournament, which was held under the aegis of the ECB during the tournament period. Despite being drafted into the Karnataka Tuskers squad, Samuels did not take part in any of the matches and pulled out of the tournament.
Samuels was charged with the four breaches below:
1. Article 2.4.3 – Failing to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official receipt of hospitality with a value of US$750 or more.
2. Article 2.4.2 – Failing to disclose to the Designated Anti-Corruption Official the receipt of any gift, payment, hospitality, or other benefit that was made or given in circumstances that could bring the Participant or the sport of cricket into disrepute.
3. Article 2.4.7 – Obstructing or delaying the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation by concealing information that may have been relevant to the investigation.
4. Article 2.4.6 – Failing to cooperate with the Designated Anti-Corruption Official’s investigation.
A verdict of guilt was rendered across all four counts by the tribunal. As far as the first count was concerned, a majority decision was reached, whereas, for the rest of the three counts, a unanimous decision was reached.
Marlon Samuels was an iconic and controversial cricketer who played in 71 Tests, 207 One-Day Internationals, and 67 Twenty-Twenty Internationals. Samuels formally announced his retirement in November 2020.
