Following Tuesday’s heavy rains, the authorities have launched a search for a missing couple whose vehicle was swept away by floodwaters.

Yesterday saw a number of communities in sections of Jamaica experience heavy rainfall and flooding amid the passage of Tropical Storm Rafael. Among the heavily flooded communities were sections of Worthy Park, with a video shared online of a pickup truck being swept away in the floodwaters.

In the video, which was seemingly recorded by another motorist, the white pickup can be seen drifting in the murky waters along a heavily flooded road. The occupants of the vehicle cannot be seen because of the heavy tint.

Reports from TVJ News state that the driver of the pickup was attempting to cross the road sometime after 4 p.m. when the vehicle was swept away. A team from the Jamaica Defence Force’s Coast Guard has since joined the search for the couple.

The head of the St. Catherine North police division, Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, shared that the vehicle was visible up to nightfall yesterday evening. Nicholson further disclosed that a pair of Crocs believed to belong to one of the occupants was found.

“We went into the area. There are some persons from the community who went into the water and tried to see what they could do. But, due to the status of the water, they were not able to see much. They saw a pair of Crocs believed to be worn by one of the occupants of the vehicle,” Nicholson shared.
