In an interview shared online Thursday, attorney Isat Buchanan criticised Mr. Vegas’s extremely vocal approach to discussing politics and his support of the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).
Speaking on IRIE FM’s Road to Success, Buchanan advised artistes not to completely submerge themselves in politics and take sides. He also described Mr. Vegas as a “shower ranger,” making reference to the JLP’s catchphrase “Shower Labourite.”
“I will advise any artiste, any musician, you are a businessperson; you have the opportunity to be a national icon like Bob Marley through God blessing you and your music. Do not go down the rabbit hole of submerging yourself in political life. Do not be a Vegas. At least be more talented than Vegas so you don’t have to seem like a real green shower ranger, submerging yourself in political life,” Buchanan said.
The lawyer’s interview sparked a response from Mr. Vegas, with the Heads High deejay reacting to the statements in a video circulated online on Saturday. Highlighting Buchanan’s past convictions for drug-related crimes, Mr. Vegas expressed that the controversial attorney would never be able to match his achievements.
“You will never ever in your wildest dream be able to walk close to me or close to my shoes that I step in. Mr Cocaine smuggler, Mr Drug smuggler, that already done. Cyah rub out. You are a disgrace,” Mr. Vegas said. He went on to criticise Buchanan for not taking responsibility for his actions.
“You went into drug smuggling. You got caught, and you took no responsibility, in my opinion, to show di people dem seh you did something wrong. Yuh come blame people seh a dem gi yuh fi carry,” Mr. Vegas stated.
