According to reports, a sizable group of Haitians arrived on Sunday evening in Long Bay, Portland via an eighteen-foot sailboat, with an estimated number of at least 30 individuals including adults and children
The police are currently searching for Haitian visitors, who are suspected of having entered Jamaica illegally within the last 24 hours. Authorities have issued a cautionary message to residents in the area to remain vigilant and report any sightings of the refugees.
According to North Coast Times Jamaica, at least 3 of the Haitians ran away from the group before residents could realize the fullness of the situation.
This occasion marks the third occurrence of Haitians arriving in Jamaica via Portland waters in recent times. The last group of Haitians that sought refuge in Jamaica back in September were returned to Haiti via Jamaica’s Coast Guard.
According to International Law Jamaica must allow the Haitians a haven on the Caribbean Island given the context of their arrival – regarding the Status of Refugees – the Protocol prohibits the forced removal of individuals to an area/location where they may face risk of persecution, torture or other serious harm.
