Alarming Number of Rape and Incest Cases of Minors in Trelawny; 14yo Gave Birth to Stepfather’s Child

There has been a rapid increase in the number of rape and incest cases of minors in the parish of Trelawny, which has caught the attention of the media to bring light to the heightened, unlawful situation.
A reporter, Kelesha Williams visited the community of Litchfield in the parish, where there are at least three (3) recent reported cases of incest. The incidents were confirmed by residents who stated that it has been a long-standing issue in the community.
One resident openly spoke to the news team where he expressed that fathers and step-fathers are the main perpetrators of the act. He stated that he knows of an incident where a father sexually assaulted his daughter because of her attractive physical features as she matured.
Another resident corroborated the story by saying that the unlawful sexual activities have been widely known throughout the community. He expressed that as the years passed, the issue has now gotten to the point where it is out of control, and pleads for it to come to an end.
A distraught father who commented on the matter stated that his son was involved in the heinous act, he had sex with his stepdaughter who is 14 years of age. He noted that she got impregnated and recently gave birth. The accused, his son, is said to have been charged and currently serving a prison sentence.
The reporter also visited the house of one of the men imprisoned for having sex with his daughter and spoke to the accused’s mother. She is said to have denied the allegations against her son, claiming that he is innocent of the crime.
According to the Serious Crimes Report by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), the cases mentioned are among 14 reported incidents reported since the start of the year in the parish. Compared to the corresponding period last year, there has been an increase of 5, which all stems from certain communities in the parish.
Head of the Trelawny Police Division, DSP Winston Milton declared that some instances of the crimes are revealed when the victims visit the hospitals after being impregnated.
The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) reported that for the 2022 period, the CPSFA did not receive any reports of unlawful acts in the parish of Trelawny, however, for the period January to September 2023, there were 4 cases reported of incest.
