Amid the increase in violent crimes and corruption in Jamaica, Dancehall veterans Bounty Killer and Baby Cham have released their highly anticipated collaborative single “BLOOD CLXXT”, which tackles the various problems now rooted in Jamaica’s society.
Directed by Shane Creative, the music video for the track depicts Bounty and Cham in combat gear in the inner city and artfully intercuts factual news cast reels to overlap the expressive and all too real lyrical narrative.
“Bredda watch yuh back when yuh a park. Switch up unoo ride a dat di pussy dem a stalk,” Cham sings as a clip is shown of the gruesome slaying of a St. Elizabeth Chinese couple in their supermarket.
“Minister a thief and di pussy get caught. How that fi happen and nobody naa wrath.” Bounty declares in his second verse, as images are displayed of the disgraced former Minister of Education Ruel Reid, who was charged in 2019 for allegedly defrauding the Ministry of Education and the Caribbean Maritime University of millions of dollars.
Also displayed multiple times in the music video are clips of protesters with photographs of suspected murdered social media personality 24-year-old, Donna-Lee Donaldson.
Donaldson was reported missing on July 13, and her boyfriend, Constable Noel Maitland arrested weeks later, first for suspicion of being involved in her disappearance but later charged for her murder. The case developed from a missing person to a murder investigation after blood matching Donaldson’s was found in Maitland’s apartment on his curtains and couch.
Citing the amount of blood discovered, investigators did not believe that Donaldson would have been able to survive the attack. Donaldson’s body has still not been found.
Tackling controversial or crime-based topics is nothing new to the legendary artistes, and the song will certainly resonate with Jamaicans.
