A police investigation is ongoing following the gruesome discovery of an unidentified infant in the Rio Cobre River.

According to reports from the jamaica Star, on Wednesday, residents in the vicinity of Buck Town, St. Catherine, found the child’s body floating in the river at approximately 1:30 p.m. The St Catherine Fire Brigade was alerted to the situation but was unable to remove the infant from the river. The baby, a newborn girl, was ultimately retrieved from the water by a resident.

The St. Catherine North Police have since launched an investigation into the incident, and authorities believe the newborn was thrown into the river at another location and then washed to the area where she was recovered.
