The son of Nigerian Afrobeat singer Davido died from drowning in a swimming pool at his home in Lagos, Nigeria. The artiste’s son, Ifeanyi, died last night (October 31), a few days after his birthday. Reports claim that the toddler died in a swimming pool at the Banana Island region of Lagos State, where he was submerged for a long time.
The three-year-old was eventually fished from the water and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The authorities have taken the domestic staff at the residence to the police station for questioning, but no arrests have been made.
Ifeanyi’s parents, David ‘Davido’ Adeleke and his chef fiancée, Chioma Rowland, have not made any statements since the incident. It is believed that the couple was not home when it happened. The death of the toddler was confirmed by Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Police Command spokesman.
Davido and Chioma have known each other for about seven years and have been dating for almost five years. They also both attended Babcock University. In a conversation with Premium Times, Davido praised Chioma as a great cook. Davido frequently referred to Chioma as his “wife” in interviews, despite the fact that they are not married. According to reports, the couple had been engaged for some time and planned to tie the knot in 2023. On social media, Davido frequently made mention of his kids, tweeting in May, “I’m obsessed with my kids.”
The 29-year-old musician, best known for the songs If and Fall, has two daughters; six-year-old Aurora with his ex-girlfriend Sophie Momodu and Hailey Veronica with his ex-girlfriend Amanda. Following the death of Ifeanyi, who was born in 2019, condolences from numerous celebrities, including comedian AY, William Uchemba and Paul Okoye, were publicly sent to the couple.
Singer Paul Play Dairo wrote on social media, “I’m really lost for words. This is really painful. Take heart, David.” Another post from Actor Williams Uchemba expressed his disbelief, saying that he would have to confirm for himself before he accepted the news of Ifeanyi’s death. He also added, “I prayed for it to be a lie. I am upset, pained and confused. Nobody deserves to feel this pain.”
Nigerian film actress Iyabo Ojo described the tragedy as “devastating and extremely painful” as she also prayed for it to be untrue. Additionally, Nigerian-Romanian radio talk show host Daddy Freeze wrote, “When the person you love is someone involved it becomes a heavy emotional burden. I am not confirming anything but bear with me I will not be live tonight.”
