In a bizarre report that has been making rounds online since Saturday night, a St Andrew-based medical doctor is reeling after his newly purchased 2025 Toyota Rav4 vanished from his home just five days after acquisition.
The vehicle, bought as a gift for his pregnant wife, was stolen last Wednesday, leaving the family distraught.
West last drove the vehicle on Tuesday afternoon as Tropical Storm Rafael approached, parking it securely in his yard with the gate closed. “Because of the rain, we were inside the whole day, and we woke up Wednesday morning and did not see the vehicle,” he recounted in disbelief to the Jamaica Gleaner.
The timing of the theft is especially disheartening, as West had planned to install additional security features that very day. The Rav4, which he had spent over a month arranging with the dealership, was a last-minute switch from the 2024 model after a sales representative encouraged him to opt for the newer version.
This incident highlights a growing trend of vehicle thefts across the island. Data from the Insurance Association of Jamaica (IAJ) reveals that 957 stolen vehicle claims were filed between January and September this year, surpassing the total of 952 claims in 2023. This marks a worrying increase from 2022’s 862 claims and 686 in 2021.
When contacted, Toyota Jamaica’s Spanish Town Road headquarters could not confirm whether its Toyota Connect recovery service, designed for stolen vehicles, is active locally. Additionally, a representative stated that the sales manager was unavailable for comment.
