Following her removal from Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta, Erica Mena has issued an apology for referring to fellow co-star Spice as a monkey during a heated argument. However, the reality TV star did not waste time pointing out that the dancehall artiste would not have the guts to do the same.

Mena’s controversial statements created quite a stir on social media, with many calling out The Stepmother actress for past statements that were deemed racially motivated. Though it was announced that Mena would be removed from Love and Hip-Hop: Atlanta’s future seasons after the massive backlash, she had not issued a statement about the incident until this week.

On Tuesday, Mena addressed her comments and described them as insensitive. The mother of the three expressed that she deeply regretted what she had said and apologised to anyone who had been hurt by her “thoughtlessness. Acknowledging that her statements were wrong, Mena took full responsibility for her actions and shared that she would be working to make amends for the incident.

Mena, who is of Dominican and Puerto Rican ancestry and identifies as Afro-Latina, clarified that her comments about Spice were not racially motivated. “As a woman of color and the mother of two black children, I want to make it clear that my use of that word was not in any way racially driven,” Mena stated in her Instagram post.

Mena added that she would be using her platform to promote inclusivity and equality, as she was aware of the gravity of her choice of words.

After Mena’s statement, her followers spoke out in her defence, with a number of her supporters stating that an apology was not necessary. When asked if Spice had apologised for bringing up her son during the argument, Mena said the So Mi Like It singer would “never have the guts to unfortunately.”

Mena’s response has since been called petty by some viewers, who have questioned the genuineness of her apology.

“You see, you apologize, but still being petty at the same time. You still have some growing to do,” one viewer stated.
