Interview: Rugged Boss Says Don’t ‘Run In’, Talks Dancehall, Jamaica, His Musical Career and More

Kingston Native Rugged Boss is intent on making his mark in the Dancehall music space and on this quest the deejay recently released his first song of 2025, a statement-making track titled ‘Run In’ which was accompanied by a music video.

Rugged Boss who is from Arnett Gardens, shot the music video for ‘Run In’ in the community. The past student of Denham Town Secondary has been busy promoting the single online and in the streets, exploring all the means to get his message across to the masses.

In a chat with Yardhype, Rugged Boss details that he has been pursuing music professionally since the late 1990s to early 2000s and despite not getting a breakout song as yet, he’s optimistic, trusting in the process while trying to remain as consistent as possible.

Yardhype had a questions and answers session with Rugged Boss, see the questions and answers below:

Q: Why the name ‘Rugged Boss’?
A: “The name Rugged Boss came about in 2019 during a rebranding process with my team. It reflects my personality and who I am as an artist – strong, resilient, and in control.”

Q: Where are you from and or where are you located?
A: “I was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, specifically Arnett Gardens also known as ‘Jungle’. While I travel back and forth to the United States, Jamaica is always my home”

Q: Who’s your favourite Dancehall artiste of all times, (male or female)?
A: “I appreciate the talent of many Dancehall artistes and don’t have one definitive favourite.”

Q: In regards to Reggae, who is your favourite artistes?
A: “Some of my favourite Reggae artists include Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Wayne Wonder, Tony Curtis, Luky D, and Garnet Silk.”

Q: Which artistes would you say you’re most inspired by?
A: “I’m inspired by artistes like Mavado and Vybz Kartel, who are giants in the industry, as well as Masicka and Popcaan, who are making significant moves.  I admire their dedication and their impact on the music scene.”

.Q: What keeps you grounded? (Things you do to relax/chill outside of music.)
A: “I stay grounded by going to the gym – I love working out; it keeps my mind calm, and I believe health is wealth. I also enjoy reading and spending quality time with my family. These activities help me maintain balance and perspective.”

Q: What do you love the most about Jamaica?
A: “What I love most about Jamaica?.. Being Jamaican! I wouldn’t want to be anything else. The vibrant culture, the incredible food, and the resilient spirit of our people.”

Q: What’s your favourite Jamaican food?
A: “Curry chicken back (wid wul heap a pepper in a it) and cornmeal dumpling, with boil green bananas.”

Q: List your top three songs, based on their popularity and the feedback you get from your listeners.
A: “My top three songs, based on listener feedback, are ‘Tight Oh,’ ‘ThickThick GoodGood,’ and ‘Pole.’ The response has been overwhelmingly positive, especially from my female fans.”

Q: What will be your next musical release and when?
A: “We’re currently selecting the next single from a number of tracks, and we anticipate releasing it sometime in April.  We’re taking our time to ensure it’s the right fit and will resonate with my fans.”

Q: Have you worked with any other known artists?
A: “I’ve collaborated with Burro Banton. I’m always open to collaborating with other artists who share my passion for music and creativity.”
