Jamaica Competes in Finale of the 71st Miss Universe Staging Tonight

As patrons hurry to get their tickets in anticipation of the 71st Miss Universe pageant, Jamaica’s contestant Toshami Calvin was the face of a poster that was sent to the public on the officialmissuniversejamaica Instagram page today.

Toshami Calvin was the cause of a social media uproar a few days ago when she took to the stage in a green costume at the 71st Miss Universe preliminary swimsuit, gown, and national costume competition. The costume paid homage to Jamaica’s national heroine, Nanny of the Maroons.

The costume also included a replica of a sword from the heroine’s era as well as another fictitious depiction of an abeng. The abeng is a wind instrument used by the native Maroons of Jamaica that is made from the horn of an animal and can be used to make a variety of sounds.

Calvin is a 26-year-old behavioural technician and an advocate for autistic awareness. She will be one of 90 delegates from around the globe vying for the judges’ approval and the title, according to the Jamaica Gleaner.

The pageant is scheduled to be held in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the United States of America. The venue for the event is the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.

In a post on the competition’s official website, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell expressed excitement and a sense of accomplishment about the city’s hosting of the pageant. In her statement, she said that the Miss Universe organisation and the city shared common principles of commemorating culture, the inclusion of women in authoritative roles, and empowering females.

LaToya Cantrell is the first female mayor of New Orleans in the city’s three-century history.

The Instagram post showcases the time that the pageant will air in Jamaica, which is 8 p.m. sharp Jamaican time. It also lists the mediums on which viewers can tune in to the competition, which include the Roku Channel, DirectTV, and the Miss Universe Youtube Channel.

The post also implores viewers to remember to download the Miss Universe app to vote for Toshami in the semifinals. The crown will be handed over to the winner of the pageant by Harnaaz Sandhu, who was the winner of the pageant in 2021.
