Janelle Monáe Mimics Famous ‘Wet T-shirt Girl’ Jamaican Look for Upcoming Reggae-Inspired Song “Lipstick Lover” – Watch Video

Once again putting her love for the Jamaican culture on display, Janelle Monáe mimics an iconic Jamaican look from over 50 years ago while promoting her upcoming reggae-inspired single, Lipstick Lover.

Recently, at the 2023 Met Gala, Monáe credited her banging body to “Jamaican food” as she sported a sequined black bikini. Now, the American singer/actress is mimicking a 1972 Jamaican poster girl look for a promo video.

Dubbed the ‘Wet T-shirt Girl’ look, the poster in question was introduced as a part of a tourism campaign made to awaken “the world to Jamaica’s beauty”. The poster girl in the poster was Trinidadian beauty Sintra Arunte who was photographed in a red t-shirt standing in the middle of a body of water with the word “JAMAICA” emblazoned across her breasts. Her wet hair was slicked back, and the water made the t-shirt almost see-through.

The poster was recreated for the first time in 2015 when singer Alicia Keys did a similar photoshoot.

Now, the ‘Wet T-shirt Girl’ look takes shape in a video instead of a one-dimensional photograph, as Monáe prepares to release her music video for her new reggae song Lipstick Lover on Thursday, May 11, 2023.

In the video, Monáe is seen in a pool wearing a crop top and shorts as she walks toward the camera and out of the water. However, instead of the word “JAMAICA” on her top, it was replaced with “PLEASURE.”

The video has racked up over 79,000 likes and more than 13,000 shares since it was uploaded to Instagram, a few hours ago. Reacting to the video clip daragnarek said, “You’re too generous queen ❤️,” while swhite828 stated, “Miss Monae has come into her season of freedom, dressing across the spectrum as it suits her.”
