Jamaicans are told to brace for a reduction in electricity bills from Jamaica Public Service (JPS) as a result of the upcoming reduction on General Consumption Tax (GCT) on electricity that is set to decrease from 12% to 7%.

The reduction will take effect on May 1, Fayval Williams, made the announcement on Tuesday, March 11, in Parliament while opening the 2025-2026 Budget Debate.

In addition to the tax reduction, post-paid customers consuming 250 kilowatts of electricity or less will receive further relief. They can expect a refund of 7% GCT, along with a 3% subsidy, providing them with a total benefit of 10%.

The detailed announcement is a follow up on Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ revealing plans for the reduction late last year at the Jamaica Labour Party’s annual conference.

With electricity bills being a major concern for many Jamaicans, this reduction is being welcomed by households and small businesses alike. As per reports, in the past, JPS urged the government to lower or remove the GCT from electricity to ease the burden on customers.
