Virginia police fatally shot a man after he tried to abduct another officer when the officer confronted him about a stolen truck. The suspect pulled up at a gas station in a U-Haul truck that had a license plate that was flagged as stolen by a camera. A police officer, who was driving a patrol car, discovered the truck and confronted the suspect.
The surveillance camera at the gas station captured the unfolding event, and the officer’s bodycam revealed that he told the suspect that he was being “detained” because the truck was “reported stolen” and further explained that he was not being arrested.
When the policeman proceeded to radio for backup, the assailant, Brandon Lemayne, attempted to grab the officer’s gun from his holster, prompting a struggle between them.
Following the struggle, Brandon shoved the police inside the patrol car and began driving away with the officer. However, with the policeman still struggling inside the vehicle, the car crashed into another vehicle at a neighbouring McDonald’s restaurant.
More officers arrived on the scene, and multiple gunshots were fired. As a second police officer approached the crashed vehicle, the officer who was held hostage could be heard yelling for the 38-year-old suspect to get off of him.
The police dragged the assailant out of the car, and more gunshots were fired when he fell to the ground. The policeman was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, and Brandon was pronounced dead on the spot.
