Man Sentenced to 6 Years in Prison for Impregnating His Daughter
A man who claimed he was drunk when he had sex with his teenage daughter and impregnated her, was sentenced to 6 years and 7 months in prison when he appeared before the court in Savanna la Mar, Westmoreland.
The Star reported that the 47-year-old defendant, whose name was not disclosed to protect the teen, reportedly had sex with her during a time when she was staying with him.
The Westmoreland Circuit Court heard that at the age of 15, the girl’s paternal aunt came to the realization that the teen was pregnant and made enquiries. The girl subsequently told her aunt everything and a report was filed to the police.
Despite expressing remorse and apologizing in his plea mitigation, the father said in his defence that he was single during the period his daughter stayed with him and that the incident happened while he was under the influence of alcohol.
A DNA test confirmed that the father of the girl’s child is her father and Supreme Court Judge Courtney Daye handed down the sentence on Friday.
The Crown was reportedly led by Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn.
The father’s attorney, Dionne Meyler Barrett, began her mitigation plea with a line from Queen Ifrica’s song Daddy, saying, “Daddy, don’t touch me there.”
Nevertheless, Meyler Barrett also indicated that her client was not beyond redemption, according to The Star.
Meyler Barrett told the Jamaica Observer that her client “vowed, on his return from prison, to provide financial support as requested by the complainant and her mother”.
