On Sunday, dancehall artiste Alkaline pulled off yet another successful staging of his New Rules Festival in New York City. But the event was not without controversy, with Cassava Piece native Mavado noticeably giving Flippa Moggela the cold shoulder during his performance.

Mavado provided audiences with an energetic performance of his numerous hits while on stage at the Mount Vernon Memorial Stadium. Several individuals were on stage during the So Special artiste’s set, including Flippa Moggela, formerly Flippa Mafia.

While Mavado performed his single Last Night, Flippa walked down the stage, mic in hand, and seemingly opened his arms to embrace the artiste. But Mavado did not acknowledge the Dem Yah deejay and proceeded to entertain the crowd.

Flippa did not appear to be put off by Mavado’s lack of acknowledgement and sang along to his song. At the end of Mavado’s performance of the track, Flippa once again opened his arms to embrace him as he made his way up the stage.

When Mavado did not reciprocate, Flippa hugged him regardless, eventually letting go as they neared the sound system booth on stage. The video has since stirred several different opinions from viewers, with some seeing the incident as a sign of Mavado’s disdain for “informers”. After Flippa’s early release from prison, rumours began to spread that he may have provided the police with information.

However, some viewers have blamed it on past grievances, such as Flippa’s fallout with Mavado’s mentor, Bounty Killer.
