Minimum wage increased by 12.8%

[Sharingbuttons]A 12.8% increase on the national minimum wage was announced by the Minister of Labour and Social Security, Shahine Robinson recently. The weekly salary for some workers will move from $6200.00 to #7000.00.

Security Guards will take home $9700 as they got a 9.6 % increase.

The increase was recommended by the National Minimum Wage Commission, they looked at the ability of the employers to pa y, the rate of inflation, the stability of the Jamaican economy and other factors.

The new rates will not take effect until August 1. The minister said she wanted to have the involvement of all stakeholders and she wants the opposition to be involved as well in a joint select committee.
