After placing her faith in a man of the cloth, a mother was allegedly scammed of $500,000 by a pastor who claimed that her son was under a spiritual attack.
Sharing her story with the press, Michelle Thomas disclosed during an interview that her 7-year-old son was unable to sleep and was shouting at nights. After seeking the pastor’s help, the 34-year-old mother was told by the clergyman that her residence was occupied by ghosts.
“He told me the yard wanted to clear and duppy somewhat in the yard and duppy a play wid mi son. So what happened was that I believed him because my son was behaving very strange, and he was having a lot of sleepless nights,” Thomas told CVM News.
She further shared that after the pastor told her that her son’s behaviour was because of a spiritual problem, he said that it would cost her $540,000 to have it fixed. The pastor agreed to receive payment in instalments, but his work yielded no results, and a doctor’s checkup later revealed that something was wrong with Thomas’s son’s nervous system.
Thomas went on to criticise pastors who have been taking advantage of their parishioners.
“These pastors nowadays, they’re misleading other people, and they can’t be doing that. Becaw if you seh yah guh help somebody and den now when yuh tek a stock yuh know yuh cyah wid in yourself help somebody and den yah teck dem fi fool eh nuh meck nuh sense. Wah kind a pastor are you?” Thomas said.
Thomas has tried to take legal action against the pastor, but she was told that her case falls outside of the court’s jurisdiction.
