Ronaldinho Jailed because He used Fake Travel Documents

Ronaldinho the Former soccer star, and his brother went to court in handcuffs in Paraguay recently following their arrest because they allegedly entered the country using documents that were falsified.

The prosecutors were seeking to extend the detention of the 39-year-old football player and his brother Roberto Assis, but the defence lawyer Sérgio Queiroz, said they should be set free as they are not a threat or flight risk. 

Ronaldinho and his brother were arrested in a hotel in Asunción on Friday night, in Paraguay’s capital, and they were accused of entering with fake Paraguayan ID documents.

Ronaldinho and Assis had said they went to Asunción for business reasons. It is alleged that the 2002 World Cup winner and former Barcelona star, was almost ready to board a flight so he could return to his home in Rio de Janiero.

Both brothers said the documents were offered to them as a gift by, Wilmondes Sousa Liria a Brazilian businessman who has been locked up. 

In 2018 Ronaldinho’s passport was seized because of an allegation that he had committed environmental crimes. Authorities said he did not have the environmental licence that he needed to build a fishing platform on the Guaiba river shores in his own hometown of Porto Alegre.

There were unpaid damages of $2.1 million, Ronaldinho and his brother’s passport was seized, to prevent them from travelling.

The football star reached a deal with prosecutors and got back his documents in September. However, no one knows why he and his brother did not use their Brazilian documents when they took a trip to Paraguay.
