Despite people’s preconceptions about her, Dancehall artiste Sandra Rose is far from the wealthy pretty girl many view her as. She discussed her father being incarcerated for drug trafficking, her mother being a model, herself modelling, her music, and meeting Vybz Kartel in a new interview.
A native of St. Ann, Sandra Rose was born and raised in Jamaica before moving to Canada in 2012. Following in the footsteps of her mother, the young artiste first pursued a career in modelling, a career she maintained for a decade before pursuing music.
In addition to appearing in fashion shows and magazines, she has also appeared in music videos for the likes of DJ Khaled and Charly Black. Despite not taking music seriously until 2024, Sandra Rose shared in an interview with The Fix podcast that she has been making her own music since childhood.
During the interview, Sandra said it was working with Charly Black on one of his music videos that pushed her to launch her career as a singer in Dancehall. The artiste went on to share that she uses music as an outlet to express herself, as she does not like to talk about her childhood.
The first of three children for her mother, Sandra Rose is the daughter of Canadian drug trafficker Robert Bidewell, who she disclosed spent eight years in jail after being convicted for his crimes. She further shared that she had to move to Canada to ease the financial burden on her mother.
However, after living with her father for a year, she ended up in the foster care system.
“Everybody looks at me, and they’re like, ‘Oh, she’s rich. Shi born rich. Shi born in a wealth. Shi have gold spoon,’ I sent myself to college. I got pregnant right out of high school, and I still sent myself to college pregnant, doing two jobs while I was pregnant,” Sandra Rose said.
Sandra went on to joke that she wished that her father still had the money he attained, but his assets were taken after his incarceration. The mom of one also talked about her dating life and dispelled rumours that she is dating Nigy Boy.
According to the Whiplash singer, she would never date someone in the music industry.
“We can’t have the same lifestyle. If I’m going to settle down with somebody you can’t do music [ … ] it sound selfish but yuh can’t do music to. Yuh affi just do yuh own ting, be on the low. Mi like a man weh just laid back and chill,” Sandra stated.
The artiste, who was recently spotted partying with Vybz Kartel, also spoke about meeting the deejay for the first time. Sandra Rose described Kartel’s energy as immaculate, and it was as if the pair had known each other for years.
The young singer shared that the Romping Shop deejay has plans to take her out to party again, and she will be using the moment to pitch a possible collaboration.
