A taxi man was shot by a police officer during a reported altercation with the officer when he was making an arrest last Tuesday. The injured taxi operator was caught in a video that has since been circulating the internet.
According to reports from the head of the St Catherine South Police Division, Senior Superintendent Christopher Phillips, the vehicle that the man was driving was allegedly the vehicle that hit a cop from a motorcycle last week and it was intercepted on Dawkins Drive in Portmore, St Catherine.
A confrontation ensued and a tussle resulted in the taxi man being injured.
In the video, the visible injury was bleeding while the transport operator was on the ground pleading for help to go to the doctor as the crowd around him defended him and argued.
His injury was reported by Superintendent Phillips to not be life-threatening.
Following the incident that took place 10:20 a.m, a group of taxi operators refused to continue working and left commuters stranded in the vicinity of the Portmore Mall.
Superintendent Phillips also noted that while the incident was unfortunate, the situation brought an “opportunity to build out a stronger relationship” with the taxi operators and the taxi operators agreed to it.
