Violence among students locally has taken the headlines in recent weeks, however, based on a recent incident, violence is seemingly also an issue among staff members in schools locally. Reports are that a teacher at a Corporate Area high school has decided to leave his job due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

His decision came following a physical altercation with a colleague on the compound earlier this month. In the Kingston and St. Andrew Parish Court on Thursday, the teacher, who is a complainant against Anthony Mulgrave, revealed his decision, expressing his ongoing struggle with flashbacks of the incident.

The altercation occurred during a staff meeting at the institution on April 8. The complainant saw Mulgrave engaged in another discussion and tapped him on the shoulder to stop disturbing the meeting.

Mulgrave demanded an apology for the tap, but when the complainant refused, Mulgrave followed him outside and assaulted him with a two-by-four board, causing injuries to his body, arms, and legs. In self-defence, the complainant shielded his head with his hand, damaging his smartwatch in the process.

Mulgrave, admitting guilt to assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property, provided his account, stating that he was provoked by the complainant’s actions.

In response, Senior Parish Judge Sanchia Burrell requested a social enquiry report for sentencing purposes and issued a fingerprint order against Mulgrave. The case was adjourned until June 26 for Mulgrave’s sentencing.
