Anthony Miller’s report on the 86th PNP conference that took place on September 15 was broadcast on TVJ Friday night and among the many persons the reporter interviewed was Vybz Kartel who spoke on why he was present at the well-attended event.
The last general election was four years ago, on Thursday, 3rd of September 2020. Notably, the election had one of the lowest numbers of voters in the country’s history. With a strong political history, the island is divided going into the next general election.
The recent local government elections suggest that the PNP has a chance of stopping the JLP from being in power for three consecutive terms.
Vybz Kartel’s appearance at the PNP conference sparked divided reactions online, nonetheless, it may be a move that help to sway the majority in favour of the PNP given his islandwide influence.
‘Are you declaring for the PNP’, Anthony Miller asked Kartel, he replied, “No a nuh seh declaring fi the PNP, a Waterford suh yuh done know a one comred u zimi, mi been voting fi years, mi been voting fi years… mi a encourage the PNP to come out and vote,” he said before acknowledging that he has JLP fans also who he is not trying to persuade to switch.
He also outlined that he’s not encouraging his non-partisan fans to vote, he stated that “regardless” of his fans’ political stance, “a one Gaza”.
Kartel was next asked about what ‘bothers and disturbs’ him the most, causing him to want a change, he replied, “Now what bothers me ah what disturbs me ah the same sentiment the people weh deh right yah suh share, that’s why I’m here, suh Mr. Golding will make it clear.”
As per rumour, Vybz Kartel is a citizen of St. Vincent, he was asked about that rumour, and he answered, saying, “No comment, bigup St. Vincent though”. With regards to his payment for the Freedom Street Concert, rumours state that he was paid about 4 million US. He was asked about that figure, he also responded by saying, “no comment”.
