The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has since issued a statement condemning the actions of Will Smith against presenter and comedian, Chris Rock during its 94th Academy Awards Ceremony on Sunday, March 27.
“The Academy condemns the actions of Mr. Smith at last night’s show. We have officially started a formal review around the incident and will explore further action and consequences in accordance with our Bylaws, Standards of Conduct and California law,” the statement wrote.
Further to the statement issued earlier today, The Hollywood Reporter reported that the Officers of the Board of Governors for The Academy, which included the President and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) had called for an emergency phone call meeting to discuss the incident that occurred between Will and Rock the night before.
Award-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg, who is also a member of the Board of Governors stated on The View this morning, that there will be consequences for Smith’s actions, however, she does not believe that his ‘Best Actor Oscar” award will be retracted. She expressed that she believes that Smith “overreacted”, whereas, she lauded Chris Rock for not retaliating.
During last night’s ceremony, Chris Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett-Smith stating “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it, all right,” G.I. Jane character is from a movie about a woman with a bald head.
However, Will did not take lightly to the joke made about his wife, as she has openly shared her experience with alopecia and the effects it has had on her mentally. This resulted in Smith walking onto the stage, slapping Rock in the face and warning Rock to, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f**king mouth!”
