8.5% Decrease In ‘Major Crimes’ Says Jamaica’s Police Commissioner
The Jamaica Constabulary Force on Tuesday held their Monthly Press Conference and Police Commissioner Major General Antony Anderson gave an update on the JCF’s performance in its campaign to seize illegal guns and lower the crime rate across the island.
In relation to their overarching goals, the Commissioner said JCF’s aim for this year is to have all the illegal guns seized, the gunmen plaguing communities arrested and to have all organized gangs dismantled.
For the first quarter of the year up to March 31st, 2022, Major General Anderson said the JCF in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies managed to seize a total of 223 firearms, which is much higher than the recorded 195 in 2021.
It is understood from the Police Commissioner’s briefing that out of the total firearms seized, 37 were high powered rifles while 154 were recorded to be semi-automatic pistols.
As it relates to citizens working with the JCF on their tip program, Major General Anderson expressed that statistics from Crime Stop have shown that there has been a 97 per cent increase in the numbers compared to the same period in 2021, with most persons who made reports doing so about illegal guns, wanted men, drugs and lottery scamming.
According to the commissioner, the tips from citizens also contribute to the overall intelligence and investigations of the JCF which has led to an 8.5 decrease in major crimes and as such he urged persons to operate against the informer culture that exists in Jamaica and not hesitate to contact the 311 Crime Stop hotline or 811.
Otherwise from the seizure of illegal guns and ammunition, the Police Commissioner mentioned an increase in reprisals across the island, which he strongly suggested as the cause of the death of Reggae icon Tabby Diamond and explained that the Police have been actively combatting the matter.
The topic of increased violence in schools was also spoken about by Major General Antony Anderson for which he said the JCF will be tackling by deploying 55 resource officers in the area One Police division in Western Jamaica.
