Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange has made an announcement about the JCDC Festival competition which might shock Jamaicans considering the event is always something that is looked forward to along with the fact that in 2022 the country will be celebrating 60 years of Independence.
According to Minister Grange, who gave a sectorial presentation in Parliament, the cancellation of the event is occurring due to the poor quality of songs that were entered. The Minister stated that the panel that handles the song selection for JCDC, said they could not find ten suitable songs out of the entries received despite an extension of the submission deadline.
The culture Minister made it known that a total of 123 entries were received, which is noted to be fewer than in recent years and as such because of the inadequacy of the songs to meet the requirement, the decision has been taken to remove the JCDC song competition as a part of Jamaica’s 60th Independence celebrations.
The competition was established in the Independence year of 1962 by the then Minister of Community development Edward Seaga and has featured some of Jamaica’s most renowned musical acts over the years including Toots and the Maytals, The Jamaicans, Desmond Dekker and the Aces, Tinga Stewart, Stanley Beckford and even Buju Banton.
