Throughout Bolt’s career in track and field over the years, the University had been instrumental in assisting him to develop his capabilities. On several occasions, he trained with them, with the most significant moment being ahead of the 2012 London Olympics when he secured three gold medals.

The retired Jamaican sprinter attended the ceremony via videoconference while in Jamaica. During the acceptance of the award speech, he shared words of encouragement to fellow graduates of Brunel’s Indoor Athletics Centre.

“I want to say to the graduates, hard work does pay off, just remember that the road won’t be easy, there will be ups and downs, and you will fail. But always remember, learn from your failure and try again. Never give up on your dream, because as a young man I never knew I’d be this great. Always work hard, dedicate yourself, and remember, anything is possible, don’t take limits,” Bolt said.

In a statement after the ceremony, Prof. Costas Karageorghis, a Professor of Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University acknowledged the notable achievements made by Bolt in the sport and also shared delight in the athlete’s journey to greatness.

“As a university, we’re immensely proud to have played even a small part in his journey to greatness, and I’m sure Usain knows he’s welcome back any time!” he said.

Usain Bolt is a legendary Jamaican sprinter who is an eight-time Olympic gold medallist and the only sprinter to win the Olympic 100m and 200m titles at three consecutive Olympics games; 2008, 2012, and 2016.
