Veteran football coach Andrew Price disagrees with the non-selection of local players who applied their trade in the Jamaican Premier League (JPL) to the 2023 Gold Cup squad. The current head coach of Claredon-based outfit Humble Lion says at least one of the two top scores in the just concluded JLP season should have given the nod.

Andrew Price suggested that Trivante Stewart and Collin Anderson, who have been playing competitive football for the entire year, should have been selected over young sensation Dujuan ‘Whisper’ Richards, who has not been playing in any professional, semi-professional or competitive league.

“I believe we have two proven goalscorers in the premier league after a nine months season, you nuh, Trivante Stewart and Collin Anderson, I believe that they were banging at the door, and I believe that if Dujuan Richards could have been included in the team, I believe that one of them should have been included in the team.”

he continued, “they are actually playing day in day out during the Jamaican Premier League season,” Andrew Price outlined in an interview with SportsMax.

Andrew Price continued to point to the reasons why Stewart and Anderson should have been selected over Whisper Richards by stating, “Dujuan is not as active, he is not playing professionally anywhere or semi profession anywhere, so I would have given one of them the nod over him.” Price also says he understands the age and development factors behind Whisper Richards’s inclusion.

However, Andrew Price agreed with Reggae Boyz head coach Hallgrimsson’s overall Gold Cup squad and declared that it’s up to him to select the best team he sees fitting. He also outlined it’s down to local football players, football administration and coaches to lift the level of the Jamaican Premier League and develop local players.
