Over 1300 People Detained As Violent Protests Continues in France, More Than 45,000 Police Deployed
During a fourth night of rioting triggered by the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old boy by police, France’s Interior Ministry reports that 1,311 people have been arrested throughout the country.
According to the French Interior Ministry, some 45,000 police officers fanned out across the country to quell a wave of violence that had begun after the death of the teen on Tuesday. But so far, the efforts have been unsuccessful.
The latest reports revealed that hundreds of police and firefighters have been injured, including 79 overnight. However, as of yet, no injury total has been disclosed in regard to protesters. There was fury among the crowds over Nahel’s death, and they set cars and buildings on fire, smashed windows, and clashed violently with riot police as they expressed their fury.
Nahel’s killing served as a potent reminder that much of France, including areas around the suburbs where many residents trace their roots back to former colonies of France, including the region where he grew up, still suffers from poverty, discrimination, and unemployment.
In an attempt to put an end to the violent protests, France’s national soccer team, including PSG star Kylian Mbappe, one of the idols of many young people in the disadvantaged neighbourhood where the anger is rooted, pleaded for an end to the unrest.
