Queen of Dancehall Spice copped the award for Female Artiste of the Year at the very first staging of the Caribbean Music Awards on Thursday night.
The Caribbean Music Awards’ inaugural staging saw the Caribbean’s best flock to the Kings Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York, with the awards set to honour the artistes’ contributions to Caribbean culture and music across the genres of soca, reggae, dancehall, calypso, kompa, and zouk.
Representing dancehall, Spice walked the red carpet in a bejewelled gown in her signature colour blue. The artiste was not only a guest and nominee but a presenter as well, and she announced the award for Artiste of the Decade, which she accepted for her Romping Shop collaborator Vybz Kartel.
But before announcing the deejay’s award, Spice first took to the stage to accept her award for Female Artiste of the Year, which was presented by singer and former Miss Jamaica World, Toni-Ann Singh. It was only because of fans like you who took the time out to vote for me. So I want to dedicate this to my bestie dem because you know mi have di best fans in the world,” Spice stated.
