The University Of Technology second-year dropout Janoi Calder, who has to turn to selling donuts to help fund his ambition is seeking help from the public to assist with his lifelong goal of being a registered nurse. Despite Calder having 17 CXC subjects and working close to 10 years as a vendor, his financial situation continues to hinder his ascension to his goal.
According to the dedicated vendor, his best option was to seek a loan from the Students Loan Burea (SLB), but acquiring a guarantor has proven to be difficult, which is mandatory to get access to a loan from SLB.
However, Calder said a man was interested in being his guarantor, but with a condition he could not adhere to. Calder explained, stating, “A gentleman reached out to me and tell me that he wanted to be my guarantor, but him want to see me kinda fund myself in certain areas.”
He continued by outlining his difficulties with the proposal from the person who offered his help. Calder says he was his only support system at that time, and it was financially insufficient to meet the demands of the proposal.
Another solution proposed to Calder was for him to start a GoFundMe account. But Calder says it will be ultra-difficult to garner the funds needed to pursue his career path, which amounts to $700,000 per year, given his lack of popularity and online clout.
Calder, in his interview with The Star on the streets of Half Way Tree, Kingston, where he applies his trade, also revealed that on multiple occasions, he had to assist persons who encountered health difficulties within his vicinity in a show of his undying passion for the field he wants to pursue.
