Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw has been crowned the Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) Player of the Season for 2023/24, the announcement was made Friday morning. This prestigious accolade adds to a remarkable period for the 27-year-old Jamaican forward, who also secured the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year Award just a few weeks ago.

‘Bunny’ Shaw’s season with Manchester City has been nothing short of spectacular. Her tally of 21 goals in just 18 league appearances underscores her status as one of the most formidable forwards in women’s football. Her consistent goal-scoring prowess has been instrumental in driving Gareth Taylor’s side towards the top of the WSL table, bringing them within reach of their first league title since 2016.

However, amidst the celebrations of her personal achievements, Shaw faces a challenging period. She recently disclosed that she had undergone surgery for a broken leg sustained during Manchester City’s match against West Ham. This injury means she will miss the upcoming matches for Jamaica’s national team, the Reggae Girlz, against Brazil.

These friendlies are scheduled for June 1 and 4, as announced by the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF). Adding to the complexity of her situation are ongoing tensions with the JFF. While Shaw’s contributions on the field have been pivotal, her future with the national team remains uncertain.

This uncertainty is a significant concern for fans and teammates alike, as her presence has been a cornerstone of the Reggae Girlz’s success on the international stage, notably, leading the team to the past two world cups.
