2023 may be well underway, but Jamaican Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah is starting a fresh new year as she celebrates her 31st birthday on Wednesday.

Thompson-Herah has greatly exceeded expectations, she started out as a young athlete growing up in her native town of Banana Ground, Manchester. Thompson-Herah, who used to represent Manchester High School, went on to represent Jamaica globally, securing five Olympic gold medals and one silver.

But Thompson-Herah’s journey as an elite athlete has not been without its low points, with the sprinter recently revealing that she had been struggling with multiple injuries, including a shin splint and her longstanding Achilles injury.

Nonetheless, Thompson-Herah remains optimistic and declared that she was happy as she shared her hopes for her birthday with her followers on Instagram in a celebratory post. “I am happy! Today is the day I was brought into this world to be a blessing and inspiration to the people around me. I am a wonderful person. I hope I’ll be given more birthdays to fulfil all of my dreams,” Thompson-Herah wrote.

The Commonwealth champion went on to share birthday wishes she had received from her friends and supporters, such as retired sprinter Asafa Powell and his wife, model Alyshia Miller-Powell.
