Elaine Thompson-Herah Reveals She Almost Quit Sprinting After Struggling With Multiple Injuries – Watch Video

Following her 100m season-opening race at the JAAA All Comers Meet, Diamond League champion Elaine Thompson-Herah revealed that she almost quit sprinting this season after struggling with multiple injuries.

Thompson-Herah kicked off her 2023 athletic season with appearances in the 60m and 400m but has been absent from the track since her 200m opener at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational meet in April. The sprinter returned triumphantly on Saturday at the JAAA meet at the Ashenheim Stadium at Jamaica College, winning the women’s 100m in 11.24 seconds.

Speaking to the press after her race, Thompson-Herah discussed the challenges she has faced this season. Discussing the upcoming World Championships, Thompson-Herah shared that she has always struggled to prepare for the competition.

The Olympic sprint champion revealed that, at one point, she contemplated giving up as her work in training was yielding poor results.

“I cried most mornings. I drove in my car going home I cried because I see that I’m working hard and I’m not getting the result I want, and I was on the verge to give up, honestly,” Thompson-Herah stated.

The athlete, who has been struggling with an Achilles injury for multiple years, added that the longstanding injury continues to affect her. Thompson-Herah disclosed that her entire body shut down after suffering a knee injury and a shin splint.

In regards to the national trials in July to select Jamaica’s team for the World Championships, Thompson-Herah told reporters that she has no specific expectations but simply wants to qualify. Thompson-Herah admitted that she is nervous but remains optimistic, sharing that she has been pain-free for the last two weeks.
