Police arrested a woman in Florida after she allegedly gave her estranged disabled Jamaican husband 140 stabs at their home in Palm Springs nearly two weeks ago.
Joan Burke, who is still in custody, is 61 years old and she is charged for the murder of 62-year-old Melvin Weller.
On Tuesday ABC’s WPBF 25 News reported that the couple was in the mids of a divorce battle and their assets were going to be split. Additionally, the attorney of Weller said that the husband was willing to split the assets and he had plans to retire in his native Jamaica when the divorce was finalized.
Weller, who had issues with walking, was found on February 11 by his stepson, who reportedly called the police. Upon the arrival of the police, the Jamaican man was discovered lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor as he had “multiple stab wounds and lacerations to his body”.
Investigation revealed knives and a meat cleaver in the kitchen sink that was believed to be murder weapons.
According to the article, Burke was located in the bathroom with cuts of her hands, but she remained silent.
Subsequently, she was taken into custody and charged with murder. Reportedly the Palm Springs community are baffled by the homicide.
Later, Weller’s autopsy showed that he sustained 140 stabs along with a skull fracture received from getting hit with the meat cleaver to the right rear of his head.
Weller’s attorney, Nicole Hamil-Scott, also told WPBF 25 News that Weller had filed the divorce last December. Hamil-Scott stated that things didn’t need to happen this way and mentioned that one of the possible problems in the divorce case was alleged: “millions of dollars in real estate that, under Florida law, would have to be divided”.
Hamil-Scott said both Burke’s attorney and herself saw the couple discussing this first hand.
In addition to this, Hamil-Scott noted that one of the assets that would be divided was Burke’s nursing assistant pension.
Without being granted bail upto Tuesday, Burke remained in custody.
