Former Manchester United Premier League player and coach Stephen McClaren has been announced as the new head coach for the Jamaican senior men’s team, the Reggae Boyz.
The Jamaica Football Federation made the announcement on Wednesday following the June departure of Heimir Hallgrimsson, who recently took over as the head coach for Ireland.
Michael Ricketts, the president of the JFF, has since expressed confidence in McClaren’s selection and said he is looking forward to the coach guiding the Boyz to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to SportsMax, McClaren signed on to coach the senior team on a two-year contract. His first test as head coach is set to unfold in September when the Boyz face Cuba in the CONCACAF Nations League.
Following the announcement, McClarren shared his excitement about joining Team Jamaica.
He expressed that he did not hesitate to take the opportunity as it was ideally suited to him at this time in his career. The former footballer further stated that he has long seen the potential of the Reggae Boyz.
“I spent time at FIFA as a technical advisor on their Global Eco Analysis project. Jamaica was one of the teams I worked with, and I quickly came to realise the potential the country possessed.”
He continues, “In the years since, that potential has grown significantly, and there is every reason to believe that with continued hard work and development, a bright future lies ahead,” McClaren said.
