Wearing the favourites tag, the Reggae Boyz battled title holders, the mighty Americans to gain an early advantage in their quest to advance from the group stages of this year’s edition of the Gold Cup. Reggae Boyz’s pre-game wishes were granted as they raced into an early lead through man of the match Damian Lowe.
Lowe scored only his third goal for the Reggae Boyz through a fantastic header created by debutant Demari Gray with a well-waited cross from a free kick. The home crowd was stunned into silenced as the Reggae Boyz continued their dominance against a weakened US team.
After some great pressing from the Reggae Boyz, they stifled the Americans from creating many chances. Following their constant attacks, Reggae Boyz was rewarded with a penalty as Kavon Lambert drew a foul in the area.
Leon Bailey stepped up in an effort to double his team advantage but failed miserably as his poorly placed shot was easily saved. If that was not bad enough, the Aston Villa winger spurned the rebound, which fell straight at his boot.
Lowe’s early goal and some goal-saving tackles weren’t enough to secure the victory against the home team after the Americans found a late equaliser in the 89th minute to spoil the Reggae Boyz party.
