Jamaica’s Copa America Opener vs. Mexico Ends 0-1

Saturday night, the Reggae Boyz played against Mexico in their first match of the 2024 Copa America tournament, the match was played on day 3 of the tournament which started with Argentina vs. Canada.

Jamaica was hunting their first point in the competition having lost all six matches the previous two times they entered the competition. This game takes the tally up to seven matches lost in the Copa America.

Mexico started the game on the front foot forcing an impressive save from Jahmali Waite in the third minute of the match.

As minutes went on in the first-half Jamaica managed to carve out multiple opportunities of their own, one of such caused Nicholson to sustain a head injury as he headed a freekick towards the Mexico goal, the ball went wide.

Jamaica managed their first shot on target in the 25th minute, forcing a save from the Mexican goalkeeper. After initial dominance, Mexico was unable to get into a riddim for the rest of the first half which ended 0-0.

Jamaica started the second half on the front foot, obtaining two corner kicks in the first 5 minutes after restarting, forcing a save from the Mexican goalkeeper in the process.

The Reggae Boyz thought they scored in the 50th minute via a headed goal from Michail Antonio which was ruled offside. Mexico’s goalkeeper made his third save of the game in the 53rd minute as Jamaica continued their quest for a goal in the match.

Waite who was making his 10th appearance for Jmaaica had to make an impressive save to his left in the 56th minute giving Mexico a corner.

The match was even in the 60th minute with each goalkeeper making three saves, the shots at goal were even as well. However, from that point on Mexico grew into the game and began dominating, the domination led to a goal in the 68th minute.

Notably, Jamaica conceded moments after making three substitutions. The match ended 0-1 to Mexico.

Earlier coach Heimir Hallgrimsson stated that this match was an opportunity to make history as they compete in Group B, alongside Mexico, Ecuador, and Venezuela.

The Reggae Boyz will play their next match against Ecuador on June 26.
