In a stunning turn of events, former member of parliament for St. Mary, Joylan Silvera is now in police custody after being listed as the main suspect in his wife’s murder. A video is currently in circulation showing the former public official being put into a private car by police in handcuffs.
The death of Melissa Silvera was initially ruled as dying from natural occurrences, however, an autopsy report now reveals that the victim possibly died of gunshot wounds as per the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) hierarchy.
According to the Deputy of Police in charge of the Crime and Security Portfolio, Fitz Bailey, after the newly found evidence, they quickly launched a counter-investigation into the matter and reassigned the case to the Major Investigation Taskforce (MIT).
In a clear message posted to JCF’s Instagram handle, Bailey says the police are very much pursuing justice and truth in the case despite contrasting speculations from the public.
“This significant development is a testament to the dedication of the JCF in serving the public and upholding the principles of being a force for good, the JCF remains resolute in its commitment to transparency, justice and public safety. We understand the concerns of the public and this update is provided to assure that our work is ongoing and focused on seeking the truth,” Bailey declared.
He went on to send his condolence to the victim’s family and thanked the different arms of the JCF which aided in the breakthrough into the case. Bailey also urges members of the public with valuable information that can help with the murder investigation to get in contact with their dedicated hotlines or the nearest police station.
