Masicka released his first studio album, 438, in 2021 independently through Genasyde/1Syde Records, with the project later becoming the third-best-selling Jamaican album the following year. Highly praised, 438 made its debut on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart at #2.

Following suit, Generation of Kings was released on December 1, 2023, and also debuted at #2 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. G.O.K went on to outperform 438, racking up 3,500 units from sales and streaming during its first week of release in the United States. 438 had 2,864 units in its first week.

Over the past couple of years, Masicka has been a regular fixture on the ‘Jamaica Apple Music Top Songs’ chart, currently at number one with ‘Whites’.

Based on local chart dominance and the feedback from Dancehall enthusiasts, G.O.K and 438 are arguably the two best Dancehall albums over the past decade. However, this showing of dominance on the local Dancehall scene has seemingly gone unnoticed by the Grammy committee who did not add him to the list of nominees for ‘Best Reggae Album’.

It’s not only Masicka’s supporters who are criticising the Grammy committee online, with popular international names such as Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion, Dolly Parton, Nicki Minaj and Justin Timberlake also being overlooked, with Timberlake only getting a nod for writing credit.

In total, there are 94 categories with hundreds of nominees for the 67th Grammy Awards. Beyoncé is leading with nominations, she got an impressive 11 nods because of her ‘Cowboy Carter’ album. Notably, in the past Jay-Z publicity criticised the association after Beyoncé missed out on a top award.

Kanye West also famously called out the committee in his viral speech after Taylor Swift had won her first Grammy, he felt that Beyoncé should have won.

On October 31, the Genahsyde artiste took to X to announce that his third studio album is on the way, “New project Dec 4th. Best work yet.”
